Baseball Crazy

February 7, 2011

This family has gone completely baseball crazy. Joel has always been a San Francisco Giants fan (even watching games during labor with our first born!). JT started out an A’s fan, just to be different I guess, but we all caught the magic this year with the SF Giants became the World Champions. It has a lot to do with the quirky characters on the team for sure, hometown pride, and just a love of baseball in general. We’ve been looking forward to this last weekend for quite some time because Saturday was the annual Fan Fest at AT&T park in San Francisco.

When we first got close to the stadium, we saw the enormous line of people waiting to get in and realized we weren’t going anywhere fast, so we stopped and got some breakfast by the park, which sits right on the SF Bay. JT was enjoying the view waiting for the food…

There were so many people that showed up, they had to close the gates and we waited in line for close to 2 hours to get in. It got really crazy and we were basically shoved into the gates when they finally opened. Lulu went a little nuts waiting…

Once we finally got in we made the decision not to wait in any more enormous lines for players signatures and made our way down to the field to soak in the atmosphere. There were lots of games of catch going on down there. Lulu loves to play catch with her Dad…

JT was nervous he would hit someone so he and Dad found a spot by the outfield wall where JT practiced his pitching…

I think all of us had a great time. JT did really great waiting in line, which could have been a disaster with the shoving and crowds, but he met someone next to us who was really good at distracting him and they laughed a lot at the all the bird droppings above us in the rafters and making silly faces to relax (she was claustrophobic so could sympathize with JT’s anxiety). The entire two hours in line JT was convinced (I was a bit too) that they wouldn’t open the gates back up and he got very upset. Once the crowd started pushing from the back and the police had to come out for crowd control, JT got elbowed by someone and he started to break down. I’m so proud, he did his newly learned breathing technique and that woman helped. He made it without any tantrums of break downs. I’m hoping this is a sign of good days ahead for this kid. Our journey to help him with anxiety seems to be helping!

Still overwhelmed, fake smiling, not as tense as I had expected, but a Happy Boy none-the-less. Proud to be sitting where his Giants play Ball.

Spring Training starts in just over two weeks. JT starts Little League in March. We are very happy Spring is almost here!
